New Delhi: Jasprit Bumrah continues to shine in Australia, solidifying his position as India's premier bowler in the current Test series. Bumrah's exceptional form has been instrumental in India's spirited performance Down Under. After an impressive start that included an 8-wicket haul, Bumrah further showcased his talent with a four-wicket haul in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. He then delivered a stellar performance at the Gabba with a remarkable nine-wicket haul, further cementing his status as a key player for the Indian team.
Jasprit Bumrah’s consistent brilliance continued in the ongoing Test in Melbourne, where he dismissed four Australian batters in the first innings and took the crucial wicket of teenager Sam Konstas early in the second.
Bumrah’s journey in Australia began during the 2018/19 series, but it’s this current tour that has seen him rewrite history. By dismissing Konstas in Australia’s second innings, Bumrah surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev to become the Indian pacer with the most wickets in a Test series in Australia.
Jasprit Bumrah conceded just 3912 runs before claiming his 200th Test wicket, the fewest among the 85 bowlers to reach this milestone. The previous record was held by Joel Garner, who conceded 4067 runs, and among Indians, Ravindra Jadeja had conceded 4840 runs.
Bumrah reached his 200th wicket after bowling just 8484 balls, making him the fourth-fastest to achieve the feat. He trails only Waqar Younis (7725), Dale Steyn (7848), and Kagiso Rabada (8154). The fastest Indian to reach 200 wickets was Mohammed Shami, who took 9896 balls.
With one Test match remaining in the series, Jasprit Bumrah has the opportunity to further solidify his record and become the only Indian pacer to claim over 30 wickets in a single series. His performance in the 2020/21 tour of Australia was also remarkable, where he claimed 11 wickets, further establishing himself as one of India’s finest fast bowlers.
In the ongoing Test, Bumrah’s brilliance continues, though Australia still holds a substantial advantage. After India posted a strong total of 369, bolstered by Nitish Kumar Reddy’s century and his partnership with Washington Sundar, Australia leads by 168 runs in their second innings with 8 wickets remaining.
